I am 29 and just landed my first big career job where I’m heading a department and I’m in meetings almost daily with our company’s president. I’ve always looked young for my age (which I’m not complaining about one bit) however I want to step up my wardrobe/ find my style but not step out of my budget. Please help!
Congratulations! That’s a big deal! I remember when I first interviewed for the job I landed after college. Our director at the time, a woman named Barbara, was so chic and petite and I loved her style. She had on patterned ankle pants, with pointed toe loafers and a quarter sleeve button down cardigan. I went to Banana Republic (and they have 40% off EVERYTHING right now!) that weekend and shopped through their sale rack to try and recreate her looks. That day was proof that I could pull together some classic and versatile looks with only a few pieces. Loft (also has 40% off EVERYTHING using code ‘FRIENDS’), Express (has 40% OFF EVERYTHING!) and H&M (20% off all sale items) are all also great places to find work pieces. Give yourself a budget, maybe a few hundred bucks. Get two pairs of pants in neutral colors, black, gray, khaki, a good blazer, a black cardigan you can throw on over blouses or camis to dress them up, and a few button down blouses that you can rotate.
Did you ever find handles for your kitchen cabinets? If so, please share! I’m looking for some as well and have no direction whatever.
We did! We went with this simple + chic chrome handle and are planning to get them installed soon. If you’re looking, be sure and check Amazon, Wayfair and Overstock. Those handles can be pricey! Here are some similar options to mine that are all fairly priced.
You had on such a pretty pair of mom jeans at an Astros game earlier this month. I’m a mommy and have such a hard time finding flattering denim. Please share your favorites.
I’m not a mom yet but they’re still my favorites! I found those at Macy’s for under $60. Levi’s makes so many pretty options. I’ll link some others below!
What are some of your weaknesses or bad habits?
I have a terrible habit of not putting my clothes and shoes back where they go when I take them off, and I’m consciously making an effort to try and change that. I also have a very short attention span, so while I’m in the middle of doing one thing, I’ll think of something else and instantly start to work on that, while forgetting what I was working on in the first place. It’s made me focus more on taking things on “one at a time”. My weakness is SLEEP. I am always tired and could easily sleep 12 hours at a time. I’m also very much an introvert, so I skip out on a lot of things that I’m “included” in because I feel drained just by the idea of attending, which could definitely qualify as a bad habit.
What are your favorite stores to shop at?
If I “need something”, I say need because I never really need anything, but feel like I do, I log on my laptop and head on over to the same sites every time. The majority of the items I buy and love are from Nordstrom, Revolve, Forever21, Missguided, ASOS, Loft, Express, or Banana Republic for work clothes.
My girl friend is having a bachelorette party in Austin at the end of May. We’re doing a boat on the lake one day and she wants us to wear an animal print swimsuit. Also, a red number for dinner out one night. Help please!
I loooove a good girls weekend! 😉 I went with cheetah print cause it flatters EVERYONE, and a few red dress and jumpsuit options. Y’all have fun!
Can you share the book you posted on your Instastories recently? I’m always looking for new read-worthy books and definitely trust your opinion!
Yes! I’ve been reading two so I’ll share both just to be safe. One I’ve been listening to is “Atomic Habits” and it is GOOD. I finished it in a week and highly recommend it for anyone looking to build better & more realistic habits. The one I’m reading before bed is “On Life After Death“, which is a very quick read about what happens after we die. May not be your kinda thing, but I’m really enjoying it.
Did you and Nate do marital counseling? Do you recommend doing so?
We always knew we wanted to, but we got so busy with planning and event after event, that we were VERY close to it not happening. Luckily, the pastor who married us required that we counsel with him at least 4 times prior to the wedding in order for him to officiate it. It didn’t reveal much to us that we didn’t already know, but he did inform us about a lot that we could expect after marriage and what our roles were from God’s view, not our view. I definitely recommend it. It gave us a chance to hear one another out and ultimately, reassured us that we were on the same page regardless of what problems we “thought” we had.
What is a good gift to get a single girl friend as a housewarming gift?
That’s a big accomplishment! I can’t say I would’ve ever been a homeowner if I wasn’t with Nate. There are a few items I know I love, and most women will. You can’t go wrong with stemless wine glasses for those girls nights she’ll host, a customized door mat, an initialed throw blanket. Other ideas are gorgeous coffee table books, a nice bottle of wine and wine chiller, or a 3-wick candle in a sexy scent. I’ve learned recently that the smaller items make big impacts on how your home feels to you.
What keeps you so focused on wanting to improve at work and on your brand? I find it so hard to keep at things for long periods of time. Especially when I don’t see results.
I have a vision for how I want my future to look and I quit believing in instant gratification a long time ago. Improvement and progress take TIME, so I have no choice but to keep at it if I want to see it get better. I have days where I feel like I didn’t get much done, and I do not like that feeling. It’s as simple as “pushing through” and doing the things I know need to be done, even when I may not feel like doing them. I think about vacationing somewhere gorgeous with my family, or visualize myself in a few years in my new office, after receiving a promotion. Start to visualize WHO you want to be and then do what she needs you to in order to become her.
These are all the questions I have time to get around to this week, I’m sorry y’all! I’ll make sure and include the others in next weeks. If you have any questions please leave ’em below in the comments or send them to me via email. Have a great weekend and a happy Easter!
