I know how much you guys look forward to my Travel Guide’s but this one will be a bit different. My recent trip to Isla Mujeres was to celebrate a friends wedding, so it was a little bit different than my normal type of vacation. We stayed at a resort that we didn’t leave our entire stay and did no exploring at all, although some of our friends did go into the city at night. It was actually the best vacation I’d had in such a long time. We spent five days in Mexico and honestly, I could’ve stayed a week. Each day got more comfortable and even more enjoyable. The weather was perfect, the people are kind and the food is delicious. I have a sweet spot for Mexico and will likely find a way to buy an apartment there, but once you’ve gone, you’ll understand why it’s my favorite place to visit.
Because we were going for a wedding, the bridal parties wedding planner handled most of the planning that I normally do myself, such as hotel research and transportation so that was a big weight off of my shoulders. For anyone interested in a destination wedding, I without a doubt would recommend Finest Playa Mujeres for your guests and ceremony and DestinationWeddings.com to coordinate your planning. Since we have so much going on on our end, we decided to treat this like a real vacation because our schedules and budgets may not allow another one this year. We flew into Cancun on a Thursday and were driven to our resort through Lomas Travel. This particular resort was so secure and had about a mile between the first checkpoint and the lobby, so we instantly felt safe. We were all greeted with champagne and checked in quickly. From the moment you step into the lobby, you know that you’re at a five-star resort. Every area of the property is stunning. What makes Finest so impressive is how it has so much to offer you. Over a dozen restaurants to choose from, a pool for every building, beach access. The rooms are also spacious and beautiful, with a full shower and a bathtub on your balcony.

We quickly changed and met by the all-adult pool for lunch since we were starving and other wedding guests were arriving around the same time. The resort is all-inclusive, which I wasn’t a big fan of because I felt like they cut corners in order to serve so many people at once. The first restaurant we ate at, Insieme Trattoria, did not impress me at all. The portions were tiny and the food was hardly flavorful, but they were also getting ready to switch over to the dinner menu so we likely got the last of whatever lunch options were available. We went back to our room to freshen up before all meeting at the karaoke lounge. There were some other guests in the karaoke bar enjoying their night but it essentially just ended up being the wedding guests taking over the stage LOL. Because there weren’t very many people in there the DJ would play whatever we requested and we took full advantage.

The next morning I woke up around 7 and went to the gym which was so nice. I personally hate to sleep in on vacations, I feel like I’m wasting my day! I then enjoyed my balcony and ordered room service while wrapping up Coffee Talk questions before getting dressed for the day. We’d all made plans to go on a boat as a group so we met in the lobby around 11 to catch the transportation that would be taking us to the boat. We took a yacht out of the Port of Cancun and it was pure magic. I actually have very few photos to show because of how much fun we had, but I can tell you that being on the water in Cancun was the perfect experience for all of us. After about an hour of cruising we stopped the boat so that people could swim. We played all of our Texas tunes and drank everything on the boat before having to turn around LOL. The couple had a welcome reception that evening at the piano bar since almost all of their guests had arrived, and then we had dinner at Brass Steakhouse. I’m not a huge steak fan to begin with but the salmon was without a doubt all of our favorites. Some of our friends took a van into the city that night to turn up, but we opted to drink at the sports bar that stays open til 3 am.
The morning of the wedding we enjoyed breakfast at The Market Kitchen which has everything you could possibly want to eat or drink for breakfast. From omelettes to shrimp and dozens of fresh squeezed juices, you’ve got it. We ate and went straight to the pool to get some sun before we had to begin getting ready for the wedding. There is a beautiful Adults Only pool on the resort, but the downside was they don’t play music, or allow you to play it at any time. We were bummed about that because we love to dance, but ended up just moving to the beach where we could play our beats pill. The resort has a beach bar that cooks up food like tacos and quesadillas on the spot. Since it was Cinco De Mayo, they had so many activities going on. I forced Nate to participate in busting a pinata for some kids on the beach and we ate half a dozen tacos before having to go get ready for the wedding.
The wedding reception took place at 3 pm and when I saw Natalia come down the aisle, I couldn’t stop crying. She looked SO gorgeous! They chose to have an unplugged ceremony, so there was no phone usage and unfortunately, that carried over into my entire evening. The reception was at the Sky Bar overlooking the beach and was set up beautifully. An illegal amount of tequila shots got passed around within the first hour and every single person who attended the wedding was on the dance floor. The wedding went by so fast but we were truly having that much fun. After the sparkler send off, a handful of people took the party into the city but I went straight up to my room.
The next morning was the first full day we didn’t have anything to do which felt like a real vacation. Every morning in Mexico feels perfect! We took our time enjoying coffee outside of their coffee and ice cream shop before having breakfast at The Market Kitchen again with some of our friends who had to fly out that morning. This time around I had a better idea of what was worthwhile (the omelette + fresh fruit juices for sure). Those of us who had another day at the resort agreed to meet at the beach after breakfast to hang out, play volleyball and of course drink some more.
We decided to have Mexican food at Lizo for our last night. It’s a dark and sultry restaurant that pairs their dishes with preferred tequilas. We had ceviche and a shrimp salad for starters and both were much different than we expected, but phenomenal and so flavorful. Our waiter walked us through all of the dishes so we knew what to expect and we were too stuffed to try dessert. After dinner we sat out at the outdoor bar and had more wine just soaking up our time there.
I’m a huge lover of sunrises and sunsets, so every time I travel, I make sure I catch the sunrise at least once. Our last morning was the morning to do that. We woke up at 5:45 and walked down to the beach to watch it. It was a little cloudy that morning but it didn’t ruin it for us. We enjoyed the quietness and peacefulness of the beach so much. We had to leave the resort at noon in order to make our flight so we wanted to enjoy as much as of the water as we could. I had coffee ice cream every single day from their coffee shop and made sure to get a double scoop before leaving. If you’re looking for your next getaway, I can personally vouch for the staff and beauty of this resort. We’ve already agreed to go back to Finest resort next year after all of our weddings are over with LOL.
