For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you probably saw I was reading this book, The Year of the Yes by Shonda Rhimes. Initially, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the book because she talks. in my opinion, more than she needs to. But after completing it, I’ve also decided that I’m going to make 2016 my “Year of the Yes” as well.
In this book, Ms. Rhimes talks about how as successful as she was, she was constantly dodging opportunities to grow in every area of her life. It wasn’t until her sister exposed the fact that she “never says yes to anything”, that she made a vow to say yes to everything moving forward. This hit home for me.. As ambitious and outspoken as I am, I really am an introvert. Don’t get me wrong, once I’m in the room, I can work the room – the issue is… getting me into the room. I will always find a way to turn down events, to get out of dates, and to stay in bed with wings and wine on a Friday night all by myself. While I never feel like I’m missing out on anything, I really would never know. It made me wonder, how much of a difference I could make in my own life if I was to simply just start saying “yes”.
2016 feels special to me and the last thing I want is to stand in my own way when it comes to all of the great possibilities this year holds. More than anything, what I took from this read is how we hold our own selves back from things that will only make us greater. We’re too shy, too fearful, too skeptical of the opportunities that come our way that. We psych ourselves out of good things for the simple fact that we don’t have the courage to say yes to them.
I want to encourage one of you to live a year of yes as well. To step out of your comfort zone and agree to do something you wouldn’t normally do – so I’ve purchased an additional copy of The Year of the Yes to giveaway to one of you. Follow the instructions on my most recent Instagram post to win! Winner will be chosen on Friday, xo.
