For a reason I can’t explain, I think every woman on this planet feels connected to Beyonce and her journey at some level. While scrolling Instagram late Saturday night, I came across the clip and it truly made me reflect. While I can’t resonate to being on radio, or on tour, I feel like I’ve reached a very particular point in my life where I’m finally my own manager. I’ve found myself at a crossroad where I’m re-deciding where I’m headed and what it exactly it is that I’m wanting at this next level.
“The first decision that I had to make as my own manager was, ‘WHAT DO YOU WANT?’. Do you want to be successful at radio? Do you want to kiss asses? Do you want a career? Do you want a successful tour? Do you want to focus on your life? WHAT. DO. YOU. WANT?”
The question she poses is so simple, yet so pivotal. What do we want? That answer is likely ever-changing, making it even more important for us to revisit it often. What I wanted five years ago, or even one year ago looks very differently. If we aren’t frequently determining what exactly it is that we want, we can easily feel lost.
I don’t know about you all, but I’ve felt lost in a few different directions this year. The best way I can describe it is visually (visual learner here, hi!), I see myself floating in a huge body of water, where I can’t see any land. The water isn’t choppy and the float is peaceful, so I feel safe. However, there is a huge uncertainty of where I’m headed, or when it will be that I arrive, or even what it’s going to look like when I get to where I’m going. I’m not used to not being in control of every aspect of my life. While I’m glad that 2020 has required me to relinquish some of that control, I want to do my part in acting on what I know I can.
What is it that you want and why? Do you want to build a business where you can work from home full-time? Do you want to connect with and pour into other women? Do you want to disconnect more often and allow yourself to be present as a wife or mother? Now is the perfect time to reconsider exactly what it is what we want while determining, WHY.
Redefining what I’m wanting ultimately helps me create actionable steps to getting to the destination I’m desiring. One I determine what I want, I prioritize them in order of importance to know how to commit my time and effort. When I determine what I want most, I can fit the other things in around that. It’s clear to me what I value and what I really want is to be a present and powerful force to my family which requires me to be mentally, physically and emotionally healthy, a way-maker for women of color wanting to live full lives, and last but not least, wealthy so that I have freedom and flexibility to always do what I want, when I want.
Before you begin the week next week, I encourage you to take some time out to really reflect and ask yourself, what is it that you want? Deeply. Not a vacation, or a morning to sleep in – but big picture. And once you can see it, let’s create a plan on how we’re going to get there. If you’re comfortable, share what you’re really wanting in the comments below. We’ve got great things in store ahead of us!

You and me both! It’s becoming more and more clear what I need to do and what I need to give less time to.

Great advice! Taking a moment to sit back and analyze what you want and why is important. Thanks for the reminder

You’re very welcome! There’s no better time to revisit this than now.
I’m ready to rebrand. I no longer feel connected to what I started and I’m married now approaching 30 and feel like now is a perfect time to regroup
I know the feeling. It’s been SO long since I’ve changed anything regarding my brand and I feel like it’s TIME.
Thank you! I needed to read this. I know what I want do. I need your help to bring it to fruition. Time for you to get that mentor group started.
Verinicy – trust me, I’m on it! Be on the look out for some updates this week 🙂
Wow, let me just say that! Thank you for this. I’m currently in a crossroads in my career. During this time I’ve had a lot of time to think and I now know what I want to do. I just have no idea how to get it started. I pray you are still considering the mentoring because I need some help!
I love this post, I can definitely relate! I had a lot of time to reflect during this pandemic and the one thing that stood out for me was that I didn’t want to waste my time here on earth, so I made a list and wrote down all my goals and passions and I’m so excited to relaunch my online clothing brand here in South Africa in September 2020, it took me an entire year to get back to this again, so I’m looking forward to rebuilding my brand and definitely work on investing my time on things that truly matter especially my relationship with God! Thank you for this post, it reminded me once again that I need to operate in my purpose and follow my dreams and never give up! You are the best! Love from SA xx
Thank you for your encouraging words and providing a platform to encourage others; like myself. This is a great start for me to go for what I want. I want to make a difference within my community by helping others and sharing as much knowledge as I possibly can. To me I feel happy giving and helping others. In doing so, I hope to build a brand for myself and acquire enough income to be able to be a resource to my family, friends and others. I hope you find this comment well! .
Wow, def late to this post. This is a great refresher for me. I just graduated with my bachelors degree (non traditional student). Waited so long for this moment to not be able to cross the stage, like I always envisioned. My October wedding has now been postponed indefinitely, butttttt we are expecting a baby Due November 2020. I feel like I have had zero control this year. Zero. Which brings me to why this post is so important….figure it out.
